More about Lent 2015 (Ash Wednesday, 18 Feb 15)

I’m not Catholic, but I do try to give something up for Lent yearly. Lent is not just a Catholic “thing” but that’s how I came about it.
Wikipedia says that Lent “begins on Ash Wednesday and covers a period of approximately six weeks before Easter Sunday. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement and self-denial.” The last thing, self-denial, is what I struggled with and for the most part overcame (mainly because the things I give up for Lent I’ve already given up for other reasons — it just “formalize and verbalize it”.
Previous things I’ve given up included malted milk balls, coconut (health reasons), watermelon and the entire melon clan (health reasons), the “n” word, the “s” word, the “gd” phrase (religious reasons in addition to just giving it up), the use of the word “like” like, well, you know like (an example…not backsliding!), Red Roof Inns, Big Macs (sorry McDonalds’…), and other things. I first started “celebrating” Lent because my college roommate at the time was a devout Catholic and I didn’t want Mike Rogers to try to fend off temptation while I’m sitting around, dumb and happy (wasn’t fat back then…).
My second former wife and continued friend Jessica Krall always told me that if you want to do it, it takes about 27 days to break a habit….about the period of time between Lent and Easter I think (smart, that Jess woman *smiling*).
So knowing that many of you are like me, non-Catholics, what are YOU giving up for Lent this year? Me, I’m giving up any kind of pen which has ink other than black, and the phrase “really?” It’s overdone. Come on…play along…and no, you cannot give up “snow” because it’s not gonna happen!! *smiling*
Regardless of your personal religious slant, I hope that you have a wonderful Ash Wednesday!!

About Settummanque

Take your standard Oliver North. Add strong parts of Bill Cosby and Sir Robert Baden-Powell (the founder of Scouting). Throw in Johny Bravo without the "hurhhs!" and his pecks. Add a strong dose of parenting, the sexuality of a latin lover, and Mona Lisa's smile. And a 40 year old's body frame. That's me basically *grinning*
