In another twist to get the BSA back on track as the dominant national youth-serving organization, the BSA’s National Executive Board appointed Dr. Robert (Bob) Gates to that volunteer body and elected him as the program’s next National President. Gates would serve in the place of Randall Stephenson, the Chairman/CEO of AT&T who was on track to be the BSA’s next national president. Gates will be ratified by the volunteers of the BSA’s National Council in the spring of 2014 during the BSA’s National Meeting scheldued to take place in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. Bob Gates is a Distinguished Eagle Scout, and previously served as the national chair of the Board of Regents of the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA). A longtime volunteer Scouter in the Washington DC area and elsewhere, Gates served as a unit level volunteer, District committeemember, and local Council Executive Board member prior to his national volunteer service.
Gates, an Air Force officer and former CIA analyst was a member of two Presidential cabinets, serving as the director of Central Intelligence and National Security Advisor before being tapped by President H.W. Bush to serve as the 22nd Secretary of Defense. During the first half of the Obama presidency, Gates continued to serve as SecDef until his retirement from government service in 2011. He now serves as President of the College of William and Mary in Virginia.

The National President works alongside the National Commissioner and Chief Scout Executive to execute national programs and their policies to volunteers and employees of the Boy Scouts of America. The National President’s term is set by BSA Charter as running two years in length, so Gates will be very much involved in the BSA’s participation in the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow, the BSA national honorary; and in the preparation of the Bechtel Summit Reservation (BSR) for the upcoming World Jamboree being co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.
It was agreed that at the conclusion of Gates’ tenure and upon National Council approval, that Randall Stephenson would serve as the next National President in 2016.
