The “Song one Sings when things are Found of theirs”

Hey Scouters!!  Happy Halloween!!
In looking for a topic to write 50,000 words on during the next month, I found this.  True as it is, it’s a reminder on several levels.
One, we USED to do things like this to Scouts and Scouters. At that time, it was deemed harmless and was encouraged.  Today, it is considered borderline hazing and is NOT a part of Scouting.
Two, songs like this bonded Scouts and Scouters together as a “unit”, not just “people who do Scouting together” but rather “people who did Scouting together with a HISTORY or BACKSTORY as to why they liked (or didn’t in some cases) Scouting.
Finally, the “things the Scouter (in this case, the Scoutmaster) did or did not do, is the stuff that the youth (the Scouts in this case) take and do…because Scouting is about “creating (positive) behavior patterns”.
This isn’t enough for 50,000 words over a month…but it’s a good start.

I admit also as a Scoutmaster, I had my Scouts “sing” the Troop’s song (“Pink Pajamas” or the “Quartermaster Song”) to get their things back.  After the third or fourth time that they have “misplaced” their item, I have a Scoutmaster’s Conference with the Scout and we talk about personal responsibility.
Mr. Mike (me) had to SING for his coffee mug on more than one occasion, also, truth be told.
I left it and forgot all about it until (the first time) a Scout found it and went site to site locating its owner.  Finding me, he simply said “In my Troop, when you lose or misplaces something belonging to you, you have to sing to get it back. Here’s the words, and you have to sing it loud to your fellow Scouts.”
He gave me a card with the Troop’s address on one side and the words to “Bring Back My ___________ to Me” (you’re supposed to add the item you lost or misplaced on the line).
So here I was, with this Scout witnessing this, standing near our campfire as Scouts were preparing dinner, loudly singing:
“My Coffeemug’s Over the Ocean… My Coffeemug’s over the Sea…  My Coffeemug is not anywhere I see… Oh bring back my Coffeemug to me!”
As if they knew the song (who doesn’t?), those present joined in with me:
“Bring back, oh bring back, bring back his coffeemug to him… to him… bring back, bring back oh bring back his coffeemug to him!!”
There was a lot of laughter and some clapping. If it occurred today, I’m sure that someone would have shot the scene and it would have been a “trending video” on YouTube,  Facebook, or Instagram. *heheheheehehehee*

Four years later, I ran into one of my former Scouts at college and he told me that the day whereby I showed that I was no different than any of the Scouts when it came to losing things…was one of the better memories he had of Scouting and Scout camp, he wished that he could have stuck with it and that he was glad I was his Scoutmaster back then.
So, yes, it’s hazing and can be belittling to a young Scout — any Scout.  But if it applied to EVERYONE EQUALLY, as it should be with all things Scouting, it *can* be a positive thing.  It’s all how it’s applied and dealt with.
This is supposed to be Scouting, not parenting. Our Scouts have parents…

About Settummanque

Take your standard Oliver North. Add strong parts of Bill Cosby and Sir Robert Baden-Powell (the founder of Scouting). Throw in Johny Bravo without the "hurhhs!" and his pecks. Add a strong dose of parenting, the sexuality of a latin lover, and Mona Lisa's smile. And a 40 year old's body frame. That's me basically *grinning*
