Camp Patch Question

Hi Doug!!

Thanks ever so much for asking me your question, which was:

“I have a question about the ability to wear a camp patch that I had on my uniform as a youth.  I attended Yards Creek Scout Reservation from 1986-1992.  Each year, a new rocker was issued, and the camp patches changed over time too.  Since then, the Council still owns the camp, but the Council merged with another, and the patch from my youth reads “George Washington Council” and the new Council name is “Central New Jersey Council”.  Furthermore, the rockers were only issued during full use/overnight camping weeks, which haven’t been held at YCSR since 1996.

I’m on the CNJC Camping Committee, and am working to restore YCSR to a full use/overnight camp.  The gentleman at our Council store has told me in the past that once a BSA uniform is issued, it is never retired.  That said, I’m no longer able to fit into my youth uniform, so it’s been “retired” in that regard.

I’d like to transfer the camp patch and rockers from the pocket of my youth uniform to the same pocket on my adult uniform…but I’m hesitant because the Council name has changed.

Is something like this generally accepted?”

ABSOLUTELY!!  The camp patch (and it’s segments — you call “rockers”) are included in a category called “temporary insignia”. Insignia in this catagory may be worn at *any time* centered on the right pocket of any version of the BSA’s field uniform. The insignia placed there is totally at the discretion and decision of the uniform holder – and may be changed at any time by that person.  Nobody — at the National, Council or unit level — can tell you that “only a certain patch” or “certain groups of patches” are to be worn on the right pocket. That is a BSA national policy, in writing and cannot be “altered” by a local Council or District nor by a unit leader or committee.  They can RECOMMEND that insignia — for instance, the Transatlantic, Far East, or some stateside Council “central patch” and segments surrounding that patch — should be worn by Scouts and Scouters in their Council; but it’s not OFFICIAL and if you’ve got a special activity patch or camp patch or even something from some other organization outside of Scouting — it can be worn on the right pocket (as long of course, as it is consistant with Scouting’s ideals).

More on temporary insignia can be found on the Badge and Uniform Site at http://www.scoutinsignia.com/tmppatch.htm

“I’m a big fan of being able to display my “history” with the camp and Council on my shirt, but at the same time don’t want to be “out of uniform” either.”

Your old camp patch is a WONDERFUL way to display your “Scouting history”.  If you choose not to wear the patch and its segments, you may choose to wear the insignia on a blanket, jacket, vest or any other number of display methods.

Thanks for asking me!!
